Scotch Whisky wins certification trade mark protection in South Africa

The term now enjoys protected status in the country, which is its seventh-largest export market by volume.  The legal status will make it easier to combat the threat of counterfeit goods being sold as ‘Scotch Whisky’.

The term ‘scotch whisky’ is already protected in more than a hundred countries.

The Scotch Whisky Association, the industry body behind the move, states that whisky exports are worth over £4 billion annually to the UK economy.
